5 Questions you’ve probably wanted to ask about business coaching
Today, I thought I would cover the five most commonly asked questions I hear asked about business coaching.
Who needs a Business Coach?
I may be biased, but I would suggest every business would benefit from having a coach. Everyone knows that professional athletes have coaches to help them identify their blind spots and make incremental improvements. Sporting teams often have numerous coaches specializing in different areas. Many individuals understand the benefits of having a personal trainer to help them get fitter, faster.
A business coach can do that for your business too.
I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “We don’t know, what we don’t know”. A coach or mentor brings their experience and knowledge to the table, which combined with practiced listening skills and asking the right questions will help you clarify your needs and meet your goals faster.
Pro Tip: Coaching styles vary enormously. Ask yourself if you want a Coach, Mentor, Advisor, or something in between.
What can a business coach help with?
It really depends on what you want from the coaching experience – personal or professional development or a blueprint to follow for business growth.
There may be a particular area you need to focus on such as lead generation strategies or you may want to look at the bigger picture and where you want to be in 3-5 years. Either way, a business coach can help.
Having someone take an objective view can be invaluable. It is often described as having another member of the Board to call on. Others describe it as “having someone in their corner”. Either way, you get an expert to call on, brainstorm and strategize with.
A coach will also keep you accountable and on track by setting and agreeing on deadlines for tasks with you.
Pro Tip: Make a list of what you would like to achieve and your priorities before you have your initial conversation so you can see what they ‘hear’ you say and feedback to you.
Surely, I can figure it out on my own?
The short answer is yes, probably. One of my favourite ways to describe how a coach can help is that “we can’t read the label of a bottle from the inside”. Often, as business owners, we are so busy working IN our businesses we don’t get around to working ON our businesses. We also tend to get a little blinkered so a fresh perspective can add new dimensions to your plan. I believe that my clients have the answers within as it is their vision that we are working towards. It’s my job to tease that out of them through good questioning. I can advise and recommend, if wanted, based on my own knowledge and experience.
Pro Tip: A good coaching relationship will create a synergy hereby the two halves of the relationship produce a greater combined effect.
How much will it cost?
Coaching programmes can cost hundreds or even thousands of pounds. This may seem like an unnecessary expense, especially if a business is struggling, however, a coach can help you save time and money and even businesses from failing. Most coaches will aim to save you money within the business to more than cover the coaching fees. However, I believe for the best effect you need to have a coach you can relate to. I don’t believe they need to have direct experience in your industry but rather understand your aims and values, so they are not projecting their ideals onto you.
Pro Tip: It can be really difficult to get coaches to spell out their fees as many do not publicise their costs so ask for a guide price for your business.
How long do I have to commit?
This will vary from coach to coach and there is no doubt you will benefit from committing to a longer period. However, my personal philosophy is to make accessing coaching support as easy as possible, so I don’t personally tie people into contracts. I offer one-off power hours to tackle immediate problems or monthly subscriptions which can be stepped up or scaled back at any time. I believe having that flexibility helps to reduce some of the anxiety about the potential long-term costs by not tying people into contracts.
Pro Tip: Read the small print. How easy is it for you to pause or stop the coaching if it’s not working for you at that time?
